UPDATE: Expansion Draft
By: Sabin | November 20th, 2007With the expansion draft coming up tomorrow, I figured I would throw out the list of New England Revolution players that are said to be available:
Bryan Byrne (MF)
Andy Dorman (MF)
Gary Flood (D)
Joe Franchino (D)
Miguel Gonzalez (MF)
Kyle Helton (D)
Avery John (D)
Brad Knighton (GK)
Marshall Leonard (D/MF)
Chris Loftus (ST)
Abdoulie Mansally (MF)
Sainey Nyassi (MF)
James Riley (D)
Willie Sims (ST)
Doug Warren (GK)
My thoughts? The fact that Andy Dorman appears there shows what has been apparent all season: there is a lack of faith from the Revs as to whether Dorman can come back and be the danger he once was. Joe Franchino has always been a stalwart member of the Revs, but his season-long injury and fitness are surely a concern. My biggest shock was seeing Avery John’s name there as an available player. While sometimes inconsistent, I think he showed in the playoffs his willingness to make huge plays.
The whole list of available players can be seen here, at the Revolution website. San Jose has a lot of players to pick from, and I have some ideas who I would pick for my 10, but a good analysis has already started over here.
For our point of view, does the above list strike you as odd in any way? Anyone left out? Someone who shouldn’t be there?

I”m at a loss on the Revs. I’m leaning towards Avery while my friend’s endorsing Dorman. What’s your prediction?

Take Dorman if you can come to terms with him but he’s a huge flight risk. He’s a UK citizen so he can work in England no problem, his contracts up and I do believe reportedly turned down a raise from his initial contract so he could play it out in 4 yrs and then try to go somewhere probably the Championship. John is a much safer pick.

Avery John is a solid defender, and I’m at a complete loss as to why he’s in the unprotected list. Unless there’s something Steve Nicol and John aren’t saying, he’s going to be the best pick on our list: he’s smart and a hard tackler. Please don’t take him, though.

Right, Avery’s a defender. I’m thinking we’ll pick a forward off Chivas so a D off The Revs makes sense. Sorry.

I’m fine with Riley on the list.
Take Avery John off
I’d seriously consider putting Noonan and Christman on the list.Posted from

Unless we’ve got a Twellman-esque striker waiting somewhere in the wings, we shouldn’t get rid of Noonan or Cristman. Noonan’s amazing when his body complies: his finesse when he’s on form (which was 80% of the season) is bar-none, and Cristman is hungry. We need to give them both at least another season. That said, we need someone who is fit AND hungry…

I’m just having trouble seeing the Revs get past where they are right now and I don’t trust Bob Kraft to invest around the pieces they have. The expansion list seems to confirm that the Revs will go back to where they have been, but between style and personnel, I think they reached their top somewhere between 2005 and 2006. What am I saying? I’m willing to see this team get blown up. Either that or Steve Nicol needs replacing….sacrilege, I know.
That said, given the givens, getting rid of Dorman makes sense; his heart can’t be in it anymore.

This was on cnn’s soccer page:
Latest on Parkhurst-Fulham rumor
Posted: Saturday November 24, 2007 09:16AM ET
One of the more intriguing rumors to surface at MLS Cup was word that New England defender Michael Parkhurst was set to make a move to Fulham, making him the fifth American on the books at the London club. So is he leaving or not? None of the Boston papers have reported anything substantial and neither have any of the reputable papers in England. The closest thing to confirmation at this point is the fact that someone (an overzealous Fulham fan perhaps) has already changed Michael Parkhurst’s Wikipedia page to read that he’s now a Fulham player (at least that’s what it said before some childish individual changed it shortly after my post).Posted from

The latest on Parkhurst (as of 02:31 ET 25-Nov) is that he’ll play out the rest of his contract in New England and weigh his options in 2009. I hope this is true, and I hope he chooses to stay. Not just for the Revs, but for the state of the sport in the U.S. England failed to qualify for Euro 2008, and my theory is that there’s a lack of focus on homegrown talent in the EPL. The MLS should work hard to foster homegrown talent and keep the talent here to avoid a worse catastrophe: we’re already behind the 8-ball on talent development.
