Twellman back in form? Revs blank Galaxy

By: Sabin | August 13th, 2007

In a contest controlled well by the New England Revolution, Taylor Twellman scored unassisted in the 55th minute, giving the Revs the home win that will keep them on pace at the top of the Eastern Conference.

The LA Galaxy looked out of place, out-paced, disorganized, and were largely ineffective. David Beckham sat the game out with his injured ankle.

Good goal by Twellman; shame about the other chances he and others squandered.

Still, I only caught the highlights and hope they looked better throughout than they did on those.

They controlled the match against a very poor Galaxy side. Nice to see such a large crowd even if whatshisname didn’t play.

I was at the game, and the whole experience was great. A good show on the field, and the crowd was out in force. The Midnight Riders did their part – I only wish their brand of enthusiasm was more contagious, and that the drunkards in front of me would’ve been jumping and singing instead of trying to start “the wave”.

No Beckham, but the hometown fans got to see our side put on a show, controlling the majority of play (except for a spell where LA started making Jay Heaps look silly – his “contain” defense betrays his college basketball days).

Twellman had infinite chances early on and couldn’t get them on net – but it was a very nice move that finally got us on the board. The LA D looked like they coulda used Abel X… also, I don’t know if Joe Cannon just likes a challenge, but he seemed to take every opportunity to make his job harder, kicking the ball out of bounds instead of clear downfield.

On our side of the ball, Khano’s ballskills were even more impressive in person – and he was actually passing this game! Usually you can count on him to get around three defenders and be one touch too late on the cross, but he set up some great opportunities. It’s a good thing too, because Ralston was a half step slow the entire afternoon and was anonymous for most of the first half. He looked even worse after receiving the foul that earned Jazic the booking, and was probably subbed out 10 minutes later than he should’ve been.

And speaking of bookings, Edson Buddle was a thug, hanging all over Shalrie Joseph to earn a yellow… and then hanging all over Shalrie again in the box immediately afterwards while we were lining up the free kick! If I were the ref, i would’ve tossed him right there, but maybe that’s just because I would’ve killed to see a mesmerizing Shalrie PK with Beckham on the bench.

I think that was the biggest thing about this game – after the poor showing against DC where emotions took hold and bickering with the officials cost us a late goal, and amidst the Beckham distractions, this was a game that could’ve easily gotten away from us. We needed to keep our composure, and we did it. Nichol did an excellent job getting the teams’ heads screwed on straight – Shalrie didn’t let Buddle get to him, and Twellman’s response to the late second half fouls showed just the right amount of intensity. And while I’d like to see more of that intensity aimed at putting the ball in the back of the net, the other team is a better target than the officiating crew.
