Parkhust Getting Props

By: Sabin | March 9th, 2007

While I toil away in the laboratory getting my SoccerShape Compu-tron® in shape for the season (in order to better analyze my colleague’s aforementioned 3-5-2 in terms of success rate), I grep Google Alerts looking for bits of interest. This came across my desk this morning:

Michael Parkhurst — Yeah, he was called in to camp both times, yet hasn’t played a minute yet. I think he’s worthy of a shot at this point, and is smart enough as a defender to play in a 4-4-2 after being in a 3-5-2 for basically both of his years in MLS.

I couldn’t agree more. Parkhurst is the player I would place my hopes on in most of our do or die situations last season, and I’m hard-pressed to remember a time he failed us. Even if he was on the line for a corner and played goalie with his shins. Even when Khano Smith missed a chance on the right side and the opposition set up a counter-attack. Parkhurst was always there.

The problem with the idea of him playing on the US team this season, though, is that we end up without a stand-out sweeper, in my mind. We’ve got a serious back line, don’t get me wrong. But in a 3-5-2, there’s no guy I’d rather have in the middle than Parkhurst.
