NEWS: Stadium update

By: Sabin | August 2nd, 2007

The Boston Herald had this in today’s news: Somerville in contention for stadium.

Somerville would obviously be a good location for an SSS. Brian Bilello, the Revs’ chief operating officer, is quoted in the article that they are looking at other places as well.

I’ll post some follow-up with fan reactions and comments later today.

More later …

Hopefully they’ll plow that Home Depot and build it there. Despite how craptastic Slummerville is, it’s a good geographical location for a stadium. Though I still think it might do better out in Worcester than Boston.

chris — Worcester might be considered out-of-the-way for most folks that I’ve been hearing from, though it would be easier by car to get there. I’m thinking — after the 2 hour drive to Foxborough last night — that getting to a game by Subway would be great.

I understand that it might not be easier to get there, but my feeling is the team might fill the stands better. There are no pro sports to speak of in Worcester and I’m sure they could scare up some of that Central/Western Mass demographic that basically has zero chance of seeing any pro sports regularly, unless they like that 2-4 hour drive down the Pike. Sickos. I just don’t think the Revs would do well in the city. Hell, no one goes to the TD and the fan base is massive, even if both teams suck (well, sucked – all praise KG).

You raise good points. I have some questions in to both the city of Somerville and the Revolution organization on this topic, so maybe I can get some of their thoughts on access/fan base, too.

The latest on this from the Revolution front office is that there is nothing more to add to what has already been reported: that Somerville is a site among many under consideration. I don’t expect any additional information from them until there actually is a “done deal”.

Worcester? That would be just as convenient as Foxboro. Somerville is the idea place – Boston metro fans can bike to games or take public transportation. This will do wonders for the fan base; watching games in Gillette is DEPRESSING. A stadium in Somerville can’t go up soon enough – is it indeed a done deal? fingers crossed…

How do we contact Bilello to show support for the project? I would buy a season ticket to Somerville games in a heartbeat, but Foxboro is so far away and the scene so depressing (a stadium one tenth of it’s capacity) it is not worth my time.

I wrote the Mayor of Somerville – I got a response:

    Hello Mr. X:

Thank you for taking the time to express your opinions on the possibility of a new stadium in Somerville. Mayor Curtatone asked that I reply to your e-mail.

So far as we know, Somerville is only one of several possible venues that the Revolution’s ownership are beginning to examine more closely.

Of course, I and many other people are intrigued by the possibility of a new major soccer stadium in Somerville, but we haven’t seen any specific proposals so it’s difficult to assess the pluses and minuses. In the not-too-distant future, we expect to have much more transit in the city – Governor Patrick and his administration are committed to extending the MBTA’s Green Line through our city, and we’re slated to pick up a new Orange Line stop at Assembly Square. We already have good highway access, and we’re closer to downtown Boston than many of the Boston neighborhoods.

Perhaps the biggest reason for us to be interested in soccer is that a third of Somerville’s residents are either first or second-generation immigrants: for many of them, soccer is a major passion.

But there are many unanswered – and I suspect still unexplored – questions about a potential stadium in Somerville, including neighborhood and traffic impacts, financing and long-term commercial tax revenues and other benefits for our city.

We’ll continue to have discussions with anyone who wants to bring sustainable growth to Somerville, so stay tuned.

    And thanks again for writing.

    Sincerely,
    JR
    Communications Assistant
    City of Somerville

Subject: Yes! to Revs stadium in Somerville!

    Dear Mayor Curtatone:

My name is X and I write in strong support of building a stadium for the Revolution soccer club in Somerville. I am a resident of Cambridge (please don’t hold that against me), but strongly believe that such a stadium would be a boon for the area, both econmically (in terms of taxes paid and tourist dollars brought in) and culturally.

There is so much potential for this project in my mind – one potential offshoot would be community outreach to area youth – that it hard for me to suppress my enthusiasm. Please work hard with the Kraft family to help this come to fruition.

    Thank you for your time.

    Sincerely,
    Cambridge, MA

Not everything is or should be geared around a potential SSS for the revs in Boston. There are alot of citys and towns west of Boston (the entire state) that could bring in a hefty profit for the revs. There are also other professional soccer organizations in Western Mass (Western Mass Pioneers-USL2 & New England Mutiny-WPSL) that have a great following of fans and would love the revs to be closer..
The reality of it is, there are plenty of soccer fans outside of Boston. The Kraft family should consider all possible options for what is best for the team and the continued growth of the sport in the US.

Building a stadium in Western Mass is a dumb idea… I being a SOmerville resident believe the stadium will be great in my city, or other surrounding Greater Boston areas

    Providence home for the Revs

The Revloution are seeking a permanent home in a soccer specific stadium. What better place than Providence? Why? Providence is New England’s second-largest city; it is easily accessible from the Boston Metro area, has a metropolitan population of over 1 million, is located in the heart of New England and has a strong base of soccer fans. Roughly 1/3 of Providence’s population is of Hispanic origin, and the City and State of RI has a large population of people of Italian and Portuguese descent, many of those people follow the sport. The City of Providence was a finalist in the bid to build the Patriots a new stadium, and thus the Kraft family is very familar with the city. Unlike an NFL stadium, the type of stadium the Revolution are seeking will have 20,000 to 25,000 seats, and this is a perfect size facility that Providence can accomodate. The Revolution organization and MLS should seriously consider this idea.

    Yes to RI

If the Revolution build in Somerville or anywhere in Boston, they will still only be the lowest team in a crowded marketplace. Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics will still dominate peoples’ interests. That is why I think K is right, Providence needs to be the new home of NE Revoluton.

Hello! Any more news on the subject? The job I had I quite! There was a problem with the grade of the eggs given to me and no problem now I quite. I would like new job new challenge. I bring with me some players Terry, Essien, Lampard etc… I speak Portuguese this is a plus in your city, no? I would like to manage in Somerville, not how do you say it, Foxboro. I also dislike your teams crest. Maybe steal Bristol Rovers crest but not Arsenal. It is relevant look it up. Maybe then I will see you.

New Revs stadium in Somerville PLEASE!! Don’t put a stadium in western Mass or RI for that matter. If the Kraft family does, my friends and I will never go to a Revs game again!
I guarantee bigger crowds for a SSS(soccer specific stadium) in Somerville. Build one there and I’ll be the first in line buying season tickets.

Building the Revolutions stadium is Somerville is a great idea. At the projected site it is literally a 10 minute walk to Downtown Boston and would have a remarkable skyline right near to the Zakum Bridge. Somerville has a large number of immigrants that follow soccer like its their religion. You could just go to Foss Park everyday in the summer and get the fans there and it would fill up the stadium lol. As long as the prices are decent the Revs attendance will go up drastically and that’s good for both sides. It would also be great to hold summer time concerts and events and give more people from Greater Boston the opportunity to enjoy these events instead of trooping all the way to the tweeter center and foxboro. High School championships could be held there as well. Skys the limit and as a resident of Somerville I would love to see this happen. If you build it they would come!
