NEWS: Nicol and Mariner back from Argentina
By: Sabin | December 11th, 2007You can read the details here at boston.com, but the gist is this: After a scouting trip in Argentina, Steve Nicol and Paul Mariner are back with a list of achievables below second-tier European standards and some intangibles.
Now, for any other coaching staff to come back from Argentina and say “We’re not looking at top players” it would seem frustrating. Dangerous. But we know better. No other coaching team has done as well with less in terms of drafting and finding raw talent, though history would have to show that the Revs haven’t had much success south of the border (Daniel Hernandez, Jose Cancela, etc).
On top of their South American cruise, the pair is looking to scout the collegiate championships, according to the article. My money is on there being a greater, better-fitting talent pool there than what the Revs will pay for out of Argentina.
Also, there’s a small line in the article referencing Crystal Palace’s interest in Avery John. So related to that, logic would dictate (in Dell’Apa’s words) that the Revs are looking for a defender: James Riley is now in San Jose and Marshall Leonard is on the waived list. I’ll follow this story — particularly John at Palace — as it develops and keep it posted here.

Wow! John in the Championship, that’s unbelievable. He makes poor defensive decisions in the MLS, too often for him to be a star.
I hope that the Revs pickup some young Argentine talent. Stick’em on the developmental squad at least.

Oh, and go to UMass. I was at the UIC - UMass game this past Sunday. I think Zach Simmons deserves a look by the Revs, he’s kept us in the game all season.

Nice to hear Nicol is making the rounds and actively scouting. I was really worried we might loose him with all the openings out there and another failed championship match under our belt.
On a totally unrelated note, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the midfield circle imprint still on the Gillette stadium field for the last Patriots game. Good to know that football players also have to deal with strange lines on the field

Nice to see Twellman, Parkhurst, and Noonan (listed as a midfielder?!) on the national team roster for the exhibition game on the 19th. Too bad Reis didn’t make roll call.

I guess it was bound to happen
Boston Globe today/ January 8, 2008
CARSON, Calif. - Revolution all-time leading scorer Taylor Twellman has attracted a transfer bid of $1.675 million from Preston North End in England’s second division, according to a Major League Soccer source. MLS declined the bid but Preston North End is considering raising the offer to $2 million.Posted from
