MOURNING: We lost …

By: Sabin | November 18th, 2007

I don’t have much else to say other than that. The Revs played a phenomenal game, scored the first goal, and looked sure to head in for the win. The second half opened a bit weak, but it didn’t seem that bad.

The final score was 2-1: Taylor Twellman for the Revs, Dwayne DeRosario and Joseph Ngwenya for Houston.

If we’re going to lose, I’m glad it’s to Houston, though: a loss should be to a team and a region with similar thoughts and personalities to our own. Hats-off to the jerseys with the hats on.

Well done, Revs. I’m looking forward to the next season.

Next time: offseason predictions and worries.

Go Revs!

We need a better, more physical, backline. Avery John and Jay Heaps may not be what we need; they’re too small and not defensive enough.

We should have subbed earlier. Noonan and Smith should have been gone by the 65 minute.

Noonan looked like he was playing hurt, for sure, and was the intended target for Dorman. Ralston with an injury was not what Nicol had in his plans, for sure. I think our backline was fine, and Houston capitalized on the two mistakes we made the whole game. My impression is that if Noonan is healthy, we win games; otherwise, we don’t.

I agree with Sabin. The Revs need more than just Twellman. When he and Noonan are both 100% and in form, you guys are incredible. In the past you had Dempsey for some additional firepower, but he wasn’t replaced and there was nothing to fill that hole. Houston lost Ching and Dalglish and Clark, but brilliant trades during the season meant that they had Ngwenya, Jaqua, and Mulrooney to step in and that was the difference. Hats off to a great game, though. And keep the faith: your time will come.

Was it me or did they just use the one sub, even when they had a late injury?

I was sad to see this result. This Galaxian was cheering the Revs on… I so wanted Houston to go down.

Nothing more to say then we couldn’t finish. The chances were there, even Twellman was given the ball a silver plater. That second goal by De Rosario was a world class finish and an excellent demonstration for our midfielders about how to push forward and put the ball away.

Which brings me to my first off-season challenge, get Shalrie shooting. For all his brilliant passess and tough defense, he’ll never be one of the world’s best midfielders if he can’t be a real scoring threat. Let’s face it, Shalrie doesn’t shoot and he doesn’t win headers on free kicks. That has to change if we’re going to win a championship.

My second off-season challenge is Smith. In my mind he has become a real liability. Yes, his crosses are devastating when he’s on, but that’s the second game in a row that he should have received a red card. His head butt didn’t connect, but he went for it. That footbal-like tackle against the Red Bulls was just as lame. He could have easily cost us both games had he been thrown off the field. He’s also turned into a *diver* and a whiner when he looses the ball. He’s big and strong enough that he should never be hitting the turf in a tough contest. Leave the diving stuff for Blanco and Ruiz.

I’m very curious to see if our ghambian players and Loftus develop. With Noonan, Ralston, & Franchino still on the roster, it would be nice to see these young bucks do something other than keep the bench warm.

The back line question is tough. I do think we’re small, but our guys are as fiesty as they come in the MLS. Jeff, Shalrie, and Thompson are also tough defenders. Basically, I don’t think our focus needs to be on the back line. We can play with the best in the league, even when we give up the height card.

And yes, I’ve already bought season tickets again for next year. Go REVS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Almost forgot, agenda/wishlist item #3, get a studium for the Revs (Somerville works for me!). Agenda item #4, bring Dempsey home.

Did anyone else watch the game in the stands at RFK stadium? Khano Smith did another unsportsmanlike act after the headbutt incident. I don’t think the TV cameras caught it, but almost everyone sitting in the stands did and we can’t figure out what the heck happened. When Joseph Ngwenya was being substituted out, Smith was ‘escorting’ Ngwenya off the field by pushing him from behind for about 15 yards (yes, just like a child would). And just as Ngwenya reached the sideline to exit the field, Smith did one final big push to get him off the field. It was so blatant and so disgusting to watch, that (1) I can’t believe he wasn’t red carded for that behavior and (2) I’m surprised no one else saw and reported it. Did anyone else see it and/or know what the heck happened? I’ve lost all respect for him and you all are right– he’s a liability and should be benched (or booted)
