Even with a Mall, We’ll Always have Handball

By: Sabin | February 23rd, 2007

At the opening meeting of this year’s Revolution camp, the Krafts welcomed the new and veteran players and told the team that, if I may paraphrase, it’s time for some silverware. It’s an interesting statement.

Arguably — or at least I would arge — the Revs are one of the more successful MLS teams. We’ve got a good franchise, have won division titles for the past two years running, and generally produce and play some good football. Well, at least we seem to be able to pull things off in a clinch. For the most part.

At any rate, the Krafts’ statement worried me. It sounded too much like an ultimatum with the impending development of the area. Why an ultimatum? Because I’m paranoid. Also because in those plans, there is no mention of a soccer facility. That would be the ultimate measure of how successful the Revs are in my mind. If the Krafts build an SSS amongst the parking lots and mall shops. Heck, I’d be happy if they go ahead and repaint the football field on soccer days and run a !@#$ MBTA train down there on weekends during soccer season.

My paranoia is telling me that the Krafts are saying that if we are to play on a real soccer field at any time in the near future, or if we are to expect further financial support even, there had better be some silver from that other football in the trophy case at the end of this season.

If, though, there is a falling out; if the world is asunder and something dreadful happens, at least we know the players will always have handball (RealPlayer Download).

PS: Recent activity in keeping Shalrie Joseph and re-signing Taylor Twellman with a raise notwithstanding, I still believe that the ultimate “I love you” from the Krafts to the Revs would be a place of their own.
