Dusting Up on the ‘07 Draftees

By: Jeff | February 28th, 2007

“(The veterans) have looked at the guys that have come in and have all pricked their ears up and thought ‘uh-oh, I need to watch my back here’, which is always what you are hoping to do when you bring in some of the young guys. This year, hand on heart, that is exactly what has happened.â€

With New England Revolution head coach Steve Nicol saying such things during informal chats about preseason training, now seems like a good idea to find out as much as possible about the new faces in the Revs’ locker room. Seeing as the Revs didn’t add – dang – anyone outside of the draft, there’s nothing in the way of a history in Major League Soccer (MLS) with which to work; and that means there’s nothing for it but some digging.

So, over the next days (weeks? we’ll see…), I’ll be searching Google and the news archives of various colleges and, where it applies, non-academic environments to see what I can find about the Revs’ six new players. Four of them – Wells Thompson, Ryan Solle, Amaechi Igwe, and even Adam Cristman, who, for reasons of which I’m currently unaware, does not appear on the current roster – went to colleges across the country, so I’ve already approached the soccer programs at Wake Forest and Santa Clara to see whether they’ll talk..and, no, I don’t have ways of making them. We’ll see what happens there and, if I don’t hear back, there’s always Google, right?

I’m going to grandfather Miguel Gonzalez and Arsene Oka into this project, in spite of the fact that both players signed late last season as opposed to getting drafted ahead of the current one. Whenever they signed, I don’t know anything about them.

You’ll notice all the names listed above, with the exception of Cristman, are highlighted; those links will take you to the profiles posted by the New England organization. There’s decent stuff in them, notably statistics for each player, as well as dross like favorite movies and music. But I’m hoping to find information beyond numbers and an appreciation for Korn (though no one, to my knowledge, confessed to the latter); is the player fast, mentally resilient, a team-leader, etc.

Let’s see what the Web can teach us, people.

Great idea, especially including Gonzalez & Oka since we never really saw them last year.

Not sure where you got the 4 college players & 6 additions info though. You seem to have included our first three draft picks (Thompson, Solle & Igwe) along with one of our 4th rounders (Cristman) but you are missing the rest of the draft class, all of whom played college ball. They are: Bryan Byrne – UC Santa Barbara (3rd Rd), Kyle Helton – Duke (4th), Phil Marfuggi – Clemson (5th), Gary Flood – Hofstra (6th), Chris Loftus – Duke (7th) and our trialist GK Brad Knighton – UNC-Willmington. According to Soccer New England today Knighton has beat out Marfuggi for the 3rd GK spot so he won’t be signed.

I think that also explains why only Thompson, Solle & Igwe show up on the roster, they are the only ones to have signed so far. Byrne missed the Bermuda trip and will have to sign a senior contract based on his age so he might not ever show up. The others (save Marfuggi who is already gone) will have to decide if they want to sign developmental deals or follow DCU’s draft pick Needham (IIRC) to the A-League/USL where they might get better pay and a chance to start.

Thanks for the deeper background, NateP. And you seem to have guessed at my reasoning: I’m trying to limit the overall load by focusing on players who have signed; if they’re going to go elsewhere, I’m content to let some other poor slob run down this information. Obviously, that raises the question of why I added Cristman, but left the others. My answer, such as it is, is that the “Latest News” portion of the Revs’ official site mentions Cristman’s goal-scoring exploits with the U-23s.

In any case, I was going to start with the guys they’ve got and see what happens from there.

Makes sense to me. If SNE is correct than Knighton should show up on the roster “soon”, it is the Revs afterall. Hopefully Cristman’s prominent display on the Revs site is an indication that his signing is imminent if not done already. I look forward to whatever you dig up on these guys, and hey by the time you finish this first group the rest should be back from Cancun and maybe we’ll have the roster filled out.
