D.C. Fails; Franchino’s Back

By: Sabin | May 3rd, 2007

Wow … shaking with nerves, but I wanted to get this out. At a time when D.C. United needed a win at home, they failed to convert a 1 - 1 tie against a 10-man Revolution. The Revs head back to Gillette Stadium on Sunday with a point.

The game was marred by controversy with a dubious penalty call that went D.C.’s way and Jaime Moreno was able to convert. In the 56th minute, the referee turned a hard but fair tackle by Shalrie Joseph into an immediate red and sent him to the locker room. The Revs held D.C. off for the rest of the game in what ended up being a nail-biter.

Joey Franchino did show up in the 85th minute, coming in for a disappointed-looking Adam Cristman, who had just subbed for a not-quite-match fit Pat Noonan.

Matt Reis comes away with Honda’s “Man of the Match” title and deservedly so after making a spectacular save in the final moments.

And just as importantly as the draw on the field, the Revs are winning over the attention of the media. It’s an important aspect for their ultimate success, I believe, because if a team has the support of the announcers, then the team has the support of the viewers. This game will go down as the one that shows ESPN2 viewers what the Revs are made of.

More tomorrow when I’ve calmed down …

Heck of a game, eh Sabin? I agree with your call on man of the match (Reis, hands down), but didn’t think the Revs acquitted themselves so well on the night. Even before Joseph’s (inexplicable) ejection, they didn’t seem to have much control over the proceedings.

    Hoping for better things Sunday.

Oh, what the hell; here’s my summary of last night’s business.

I agree, Jeff. My feeling is — as ashamed as I am of it — that had Joseph not been ejected, we more than likely could have lost.
