COMMENTARY: Revolution find selves in edgy situation
By: Sabin | September 13th, 2007With D.C. United’s win over Real Salt Lake last night, the New England Revolution find themselves seven points out of the Eastern Conference first place slot. This puts them tied for second in the league overall with Houston Dynamo.
Just two weeks ago, the Revs looked poised for a treble: top of the table in the MLS, US Open Cup Final, and a serious contender for the MLS Cup. Now, however, their back-and-forth form of late seems to be no match for the D.C. juggernaut.
The Revs will make the finals for the MLS Cup, and I don’t think anybody has any doubts about that. Season-to-season, they are on track with their 2005 season when the ended with 59 points. There are two fewer games this season, however, so the math is a little different.
In a preview of the US Open Cup final, the Revs will play FC Dallas at home this Saturday. Just three points currently separate the two teams in the league, and a loss this weekend could be — at best — demoralizing for the Revs.
A full preview is forthcoming.
