COMMENTARY Preston North End Snubbed on Second Twellman Offer
By: Sabin | January 12th, 2008The Boston Globe covers it here
What worries me the most about this whole thing is Twellman’s attitude about it — at least as it’s portrayed in the article. While I think a lot of us thought of Twellman as taking all of his life with a grain of salt, his comments here seem to be expressing how he’s really feeling. I can’t say I blame him.
In my mind, Twellman is one of the top US-born strikers ever, and I think he should be recognized as such. The MLS is doing a great job of providing us some entertainment, showing the world the US-based soccer doesn’t suck (so much), and developing some US talent. They are not, however, doing a great job of keeping that talent in the league or keeping that talent happy.
It’s a huge issue with other leagues as well (thinking of Uruguay, England lately, and etc.), but I think the MLS is young enough where it doesn’t have to be a huge issue.
Pay Twellman what he’s worth, continue developing the home-grown talent, and the crowds will follow. We all love a local hero. Let’s keep ‘em local.
Thoughts?

Show. Him. The. Money.
Stop being so God damn stingy, Kraft. If you want to win, you need to have talented and happy players. You’re doing your best to piss off your most talented player. Good plan.

He’ll probably play like shit this season just to stick it to them.
He always seemed like a nice, loyal type of guy so maybe this was his snap moment and in a few weeks, he’ll totally pull a Britney! Awesome.

My points from the transfer thread.
“I have always been told that there is no international interest out there for me, but if there were, they would consider it.”
Really? So that whole deal LAST year when Odd Greenland offered a mil for you, does that not count? Do you not remember?
“So it’s at the point where I feel like they’ve gotta sell me or compensate me, whether it’s with money or more guaranteed years. I don’t have to make big Designated Player money. I just want something to happen.”
Okay, so you don’t want DP money, how about the max salary? And more years, would something like 4 years be good enough? Oh wait!! That’s exactly the contract you have!
He’s getting paid the max non-DP salary for the next 4 years, what else does he want? No one was pointing a gun to his head last year when he essentially signed a 4 year $1.6m contract. Quit bitching.
Oh and jon, how else to you expect to pay him more, make him the DP? He’s getting paid the max for the next four years, in this ONE case I just don’t see what else Kraft is supposed to do.

Similar story line to Joseph last year with the exception that Twellman is intensly loyal to Nicols and very happy in New Engalnd. I don’t think Twellman will do anything dumb unless Nicols pulls the rug out from under him. If that happens, then all bets are off.

yes, make him the DP, or let him leave. that’s what i would suggest.

DP? NO WAY! He’s a good, loyal player, but why waste a DP slot on a guy that just want to win the cup?
If Twellman went to Preston, more power to him. They’re decent and he’d be a good signing for them, but if he ended up at Odd Grenland - I would stop rooting for him. Because middling Danish clubs are a step down from the MLS.
What if Nicols ran a team like Belicheck or Beane? That’s what we need. A system team.

The MLS has become much more than a farm for the rest of the world.
How about Preston offers cash plus a player? Without Dorman, and potentially Twellman, New England would be handicapped for next season.
Another option would be loaning Twellman to Preston. The potential cash generated for MLS and Twellman as well as the experience he’d get over there may outweigh his absence at the beginning of the ‘08 season.

Another reason why MLS annoys the hell out of me. In a few years no other league will be willing to do business with the MLS, and that will only hurt it in the long run.
When will the MLS stop taking itself so seriously and let its children leave for different pastures. If they just allowed Joseph, Johnson, Twellman et al to leave and allow them to make a name for themselves, it would reflect well on the league and players –not fossils — will come stateside.

Ruiz just went to LA - if every one is healthy, LA is suddenly looking very very strong

This is ridiculous! Don’t get me wrong, I am a Revs fan, but getting a shot to play in Europe, ESPECIALLY in the Premiership or La Liga, is most players dream. Twellman deserves it, and if the seven year struggle to get his UK work permit wasn’t enough, European teams start to having waning interest in American players as they age and get closer to 28. It was great seeing Clint Dempsey get his shot with Fulham FC. I think most casual fans here don’t realize that football is enormous over there, and there are rivalries (Celtic-Rangers) that make Red Sox-Yankees look tame.
To Steve Nicol or the Kraft family, whoever is pulling the strings - Give Taylor his shot to play in England.

Cleaning up my last post - interest wanes when players approach 30… Yeah, he had a lackluster early European stint with 1860 Munich, but has developed for sure since then. I agree with the above posts that also suggest perhaps loaning him to Preston - look at how Dempsey was relatively anemic with Fulham after the transfer.

I have had the honor of playing with and against Twellman for years. Hes a very talented player and a very loyal player. He would never play badly or try and snub the Revs. Hes a true player that gives 110% every time he touches the pitch. I do believe he should be allowed to go overseas to play because it will make him a better player. It will also make him more valuable to the US team. I think Preston offering both money and a player would be a great idea. It would hurt to lose a player like Twellman and with the Revs other losses I would hate to see such a great team drop off. Keep up the goodwork Taylor and keep representing St Louis soccer and making us all so proud.
