COMMENTARY: How to bring the Open Cup trophy to New England

By: Sabin | October 3rd, 2007

Well, it’s almost time. The moment New England fans have been waiting for. Again. In a few short hours, our team will trot out on to the field of death in Texas and strive again for the elusive glory of United States champions of soccer.

One of the oldest soccer competitions in the world, the trophy ended up in New England many, many times before. Most of the time with Fall River — in that team’s various iterations — during the golden age of U.S. Soccer. Tonight, it could come back again.

In order for that to happen, though, we need to do a few things.

Taylor Twellman and Pat Noonan need to score at least a goal each. In combination, these two strikers are deadly, but lately have been more like quasi-threatening. Twellman needs to earn his honorarium as best home-grown striker tonight. For his part, Noonan needs to be the finesse man he’s shown himself capable of being this season.

The Revs need to play their game, and that means passing. Cool, quick, efficient, and highly accurate ball movement from Michael Parkhurst, all the way through the midfield to the forwards on the move. If we can do that the way we’re supposed to, the game’s in the bag.

Andy Dorman needs to step up and be visible more so than at any other time this season. He’s a commanding force, creative player, and solid playmaker when he’s on form. Of late, however, we haven’t seen much of him.

Carlos Ruiz has got to be stopped, and not just by Parkhurst, either. All three backline defenders — in whatever combination — need to keep that guy away from the ball and away from goal. Last time we met Dallas, he schooled Jay Heaps and James Riley on a couple of slick goals, and they can’t let that happen tonight.

Not since Fall River S.C. has New England had a better chance of bring the U.S. Open Cup trophy back. This team has what it takes to run away with the game tonight, as long as the game doesn’t run away from them.

Have you ever made it out to the National Soccer Hall of Fame? Of course not, it’s buried away in Oneonta, NY in a desperate try to steal overflow traffic away from Cooperstown. The Hall belongs in Fall River, the motherland of American Soccer!

Go to it, Revs! For the Marksmen, the Rovers, the boys of Fall River! For New England!

    Sung to “Yankee Doodle Dandy”:

    Revolution went to town
    looking for a big win.
Played the en’my at their home
    in me’mry of the Marksmen.

    Revolution lift it up
and put it where it best fits.
    Lamar Hunt’s US Open Cup
    Belongs in Massachusetts.

    Hey Sabin,

I am trying to start a podcast for the Crew, and I wanted to do a pre-game show with a little bit of a chat from the opposite sides blogger. Would you be interested in talking with me for about 5 – 10 minutes thursday or friday for my first podcast? If so, let me know.
