Cash in the bank … now we need a player on the field
By: Sabin | February 27th, 2007Perusing the Boston Globe this morning, and I found something with a bit more detail from the local rag about Robbie Fowler, The Revolution, and the transfer of Clint Dempsey
If you read the article, you’ll find the quote that prompted this post:
The $500,000 limit has been placed on the Revolution for competitive reasons. If allowed to use all of the transfer money, the Revolution “could swamp the league this year,” Gazidis said. “They would have so much money within the traditional MLS system. It would be very unbalanced. It’s not Beckham money, but it’s enough money for a significant player.”
“Swamp the league”? I’m not sure how the LA Galaxy can get away with pulling in David Beckham while the MLS gets worried about us having the money — we deserve, in my opinion — from Dempsey.
At any rate, we need to find a player, and it seems that Robbie Fowler may be out of our reach (read further down the article for that bit). Something’s got to happen, though, because even Steve Nicol is admitting that our new players “… lack a wee bit of experience.”
Let’s hope the MLS’ desire to “even the playing field” doesn’t keep us out of the running, eh?
