Red Sox are to Theo Epstein as Revolution are to … ?

The piece that made me happiest is this bit Bilello says about his role: “We don’t want to turn it into a circus, but we have to get people engaged in what’s happening on the field.”
On a morning where I’m feeling that the Revs need to step up their visibility around the country (why, for instance, does the MLS not feature our jersey in their spammy email?), and make sure we keep our known factors intact (read: pay Shalrie Joseph), it was encouraging to read that an independent source made an analogy between Epstein and Bilello.
Epstein, while controversial, has undoubtedly done more for the Red Sox in the past 4 or so years than anyone prior. If Bilello truly is focusing on bring more fans into the Revolution fold, and is as passionate about his team as Epstein is the Sox, who knows what could happen.
Maybe I’ve just got the pre-season jitters, but my gut’s telling me that something big needs to happen this season if we’re going to be around for the long haul. Can Bilello be part of what makes that happen? I hope so.
In other notes: You’ll notice that Shalrie Joseph is the lead picture in the news section of www.revolutionsoccer.net. Making concessions? Is this a matter of “Shalrie, we need ya”?

I really think the Revs need their own stadium. Playing in a big American football stadium makes it tough to create atmosphere and to carve out a niche in the sports market. it will always be tough to compete with the Red Sox for attention but certainly there are enough soccer fans in the area to create a buzz if the team can deliver a good product.

Stan, I completely agree. There’s a huge market for soccer in this area, but we need the atmosphere of an SSS to really make it apparent. Attending games at Gillette is just too … well … empty to make soccer memorable. Hopefully the Krafts come to that realization, too.
